Adoption Reform Movement NEWSLETTERS
TRIADOPTION®
collected thousands of adoption reform movement newsletters during the 1970's and
1980's. These were printed and distributed by organizations spread across the
United State, Canada and other countries. The vast majority were search and
support groups located in various cities across North America. These
publications contain personal stories of search and reunion, poetry, lists of
persons in search, and much more. This collection reflects the hard work and
personal involvement of many individuals who were committed to helping others
find their families, see reform in archaic adoption laws and policies, and
believed they would live to see the opening of open sealed records. Many did not
get to see that happen in their lifetime.
Now, in 2009, most states still treat adoptees
differently than all other citizens by refusing them equal access to their birth
certificates, medical records and family history. In some cases, governments
have created convoluted practices, imposed intermediary systems, excessive fees, required
counseling and a maze that searchers find difficult or impossible to navigate.
Birth parents and birth family members are also treated with 'special privilege'
and imposed privacy rights beyond those of other citizens. The process can be seen in these historic documents. Simple equality for adoptees, birth
families and adoptive parents has been called for since 1954 when Jean Paton
began the very first organization "Orphan Voyage".
Since then, hundreds of thousands of
people came together in self-help groups, support meetings, assisted each other
by phone or mail, and attended regional and national conferences. These
newsletters reflect those times and the individuals who gave so much.
Many of these newsletters do not carry
copyrights, but some of the poems or stories do. If you wish to copy or
reproduce any newsletter or portion thereof, please check carefully for a
copyright on each. Any newsletter or article that carries a copyright notice
deserves to be contacted for permission before you utilize their work. And the
authors and publications need to be given appropriate written credit along with
the original copyright date and info.
There is a limited index for each book,
alphabetical by organization name. Some have birthdate and surname indexes. Other
indexes may be added at a later date. Each page has been saved as a searchable
PDF, so you can utilize "Find" or "Search" under Edit, type in the word or phrase
you are seeking and identify most references for each section. Optical Character
Recognition (OCR) does not always identify things correctly, nor work well on poorly
copied pages. TRIADOPTION® volunteers did the best they could trying to preserve and make these
accessible. Please view these archives in that light. If you create an index that you think would be helpful to others,
please submit it.
